The music is strange and brooding and adds wonderfully to the atmosphere and tension as do the sound effects of the fog horn and the mermaid's whale song mixed with female scream (loved that bit when he first sees the mermaid. The comparisons to the Shining are a complement - I really enjoyed this film and it reminded me of the Shining but also Bergman films. It looked amazing and it was great how use was made of the real elements - you could see the actors being buffeted by the wind at one point. The language was evocative in a similar way historically accurate language was a feature of the Witch. It was a film I'd like to watch again at some point.
